However, progress began to resume in the late 1800s when building materials became available for development and new entrepreneurs started opening up businesses in what is now downtown San Juan Capistrano. During World War II, many Americans decided to move to California due to mounting wartime production demand; however, they left behind their homes and businesses back in Texas. This led to a sudden increase in population density within San JuanCapistrano which had never been seen before. As a result, many storefronts were left empty and slowly deteriorated until they were finally demolished around the turn of the 21st century. However, today there are still remnants of some old buildings that can be seen throughout downtown – an indicator that San JuanCapistrano’s history is still being contested by developers today!
In 1821, Juan Bautista de Anza founded San Juan Capistrano. The town was named in honor of Spanish General and conquistador Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, who led an expedition against the Native Californians in 1769.
