San Juan Capistrano is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 76,642 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and is included in the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Southern California was made by José Saravia on August 18, 1769, during his exploration of Rancho San Marcos de la Cañada de Joncatepec. In 1821, Mission San Gabriel (estimated to have had a population of 509 in 1880) became the second Californio mission to be established within present-day Southern California; and it continued to serve as an outpost until 1847 when Mexican citizenship was extended to all Californios over 16 years old. On January 15, 1850, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Americans west of the Rockies must leave within 24 hours or face military retaliation. A force under Captain George Custer moved out from Fort Yuma and pushed westward into Mexico whereupon Mexican officials began issuing eviction notices for American settlers living east of the Mexican border. By February 14th only about 25 American families remained in San Juan Capistrano – 10% of its total population then – but they were soon followed by others who had been forced out before Castro's revolution took hold in Cuba on April 15th of that year: most notablyánlisima José María Guerrero y Costilla who left with his family on May 4th for Caracas Venezuela; two days later their house burned down along with other dwellings near Pico Alto while they were away. American residents returned home after Castro's downfall but many more people died during and after World War II as a result of missiles targeting Los Angeles from El Toro Naval Air Station located just outside town limits

The town of San Juan Capistrano, California is located in the eastern Mojave Desert and is bordered by Nevada to the south, Arizona to the east, and Riverside County to the north. The population was 21,823 at the 2010 census. The first humans to live in what is now San Juan Capistrano were members of the Native American tribe Cahuilla. In 1821 they abandoned their village because of a drought that had struck California. The town was founded on July 26, 1827 by Captain James Irvine as a trading post between Los Angeles and Yuma Valley. In 1849 Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army invaded California and sacked San Juan Capistrano. The native people who had built the village were forced to abandon it, but some returned later and rebuilt it. By 1870 there were over 100 residents in San Juan Capistrano. In 1886 prominent banker George Hearst donated land for an agricultural college in honor of his daughter-in-law Anna Keppel Hearst. The college became known as Keppel College after her husband's death in 1906. In 1934 Katella Village was established within walking distance of Keppel College with its own grocery store, library, swimming pool, tennis court, playgrounds and other amenities for students and staff alike
The original San Juan Capistrano mission, founded in 1769 on theranch of Rancho Santa Margarita, was destroyed by fire in 1812. A new mission was built on the same site in 1818 and named after Saint John the Baptist. The first resident priest at San Juan Capistrano was Father Francisco Xavier Chavez. In 1846, the Franciscans withdrew from California and moved to Monterey Bay; however, they continued to offer religious services at San Juan Capistrano until 1862. In 1917, the church burned down and was rebuilt with a more modern design.
