As the world’s largest city, San Jose is no stranger to firearms. From 1848 to 1945, it was home to over 120 gun stores and dealers. And even today, there are a number of shooting ranges in and around the city. One of the earliest gun shops in San Jose was The Pistolero Armory on Second Street. It opened its doors in 1849 and sold pistols, revolvers, shotguns and other related items. In 1861, The Pistolero Firearms Co., which became called Ammo & Arms Inc., moved from Second Street to Seventh Avenue South in downtown San Jose. This store continued to sell handguns until 1978 when it closed its doors due to lack of business. In 1905, Wm Henson & Bros., located at Sixth Avenue South and Market Streets, became one of the first licensed pistol dealers in California (though not yet San Francisco). They continued to sell handguns until 1923 when they closed their doors due to financial difficulties. In 1922-23 Gunsmoke magazine published an article about “The History of Handguns in California” written by Julius Kappelman (1902-1996). Kappelman was then a staff writer for G&A Publications who did research for magazines such as American Rifleman and Field & Stream. In this article he discusses how handguns have evolved over time within California and notes that some remain popular while others have been replaced by newer technology or abandoned altogether. He also discusses how different states have responded differently to handgun regulation Laws passed during these years including those adopted by California (Heller Act). When Prohibition ended in 1933 following President Franklin D Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9982), firearms sales resumed throughout most of America but with several important exceptions including California where only law enforcement officers were allowed purchase guns without a license or registration (except for rifles specifically exempted under Section 11.)
