The city also has several universities including Santa Clara University (founded in 1798), California State Polytechnic University (CSU) Pomona (founded in 1916), Stanford University (founded in 1875) and UC Berkeley (founded in 1862).

The City of San José was incorporated by an act of the California legislature on April 1, 1851 following a proposal by then- Mayor Lorenzo Alvarado. The site for modern-day San José had been part of Rancho Rinconada that Fidel Castro purchased from Rancho Guadalupe y Diez near present-day Mountain View. At first there were no structures or inhabitants within the city limits; all services were provided by ranch hands who lived outside of town. In 1907–08, local real estate developer James Irvine built his largest home yet – appropriately called Irvine Park – in what is now downtown San José just north of Market Street between First and Second Streets. That same year saw construction begin on John F Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum which sits today across Main Street from City Hall
The first permanent settler in San Jose was José Maria Osorio on November 5, 1795. In 1847, Englishman John Atherton established the town of Santa Clara. The city of San Jose was founded on January 24, 1850 by a group of American soldiers and citizens under the leadership of Commodore George Stephenson. The first post office in town was opened on February 2, 1850. On October 15, 1851, the United States Congress passed an act establishing California as a state and giving it to San Jose as its capital. The originaladobe building at First and Mission Streets still stands as part of downtown San Jose today.
