In 1852 Wm Hite built the first store in what is now downtown San Jose. Downtown became an area populated mostly by farmers with small businesses residential buildings being erected along Second Street between Mission Boulevard and University Avenue during this time period

On July 8, 1870, San José joined the United States as a result of the Mexican-American War. The following year saw the completion of what is now known as Mission Park and Adobe Walls which served as boundaries between San José and Coyote Hill.
