Gun magazines are a long and storied history in San Jose, California. The first gun magazine in the city was founded in 1892 by John A. Browning and David L. Davis. It was called the Gunsmiths Magazine and it served as a dumping ground for old guns that were no longer needed or wanted. In 1915, the first issue of Pistol Forum was published, followed by Shotgun Forum in 1916. In 1949, The Pistol Gallery was established as the first gun magazine to run ads in The Chronicle Newspaper in San Francisco. It continued to publish articles and sell firearms until 1984 when it closed its doors due to financial troubles. However, the legacy of The Pistol Gallery lives on through their websites which continue to serve as resource pages for firearm enthusiasts around the world. The second gun magazine to open up shop in San Jose was Ammunition Depot Publications Inc., which opened its doors on September 10th of 1961 located at 4371 Bryant Street West within walking distance of where today’s Target is located. Ammunition Depot offered firearm supplies and accessories along with articles about firearms from various pistol writers and editors including Bob Buckman, Jerry Mauser, Dick Keyes and more! Ammo Depot also published their own monthly journal known as “The Rifle Journal” which ran from 1967-1975 issue! Ammunition Depot Publications ultimately folded after bankruptcy within two years but their spirit lives on through AmmoDepotInc.'s website who continue to offer products and services related to firearms all over the world!

From 1935 through 1971 PHP was an imprint of Simon & Schuster Inc.,USA. After Simon & Schuster divested itself of its interests in PHP, Hearst Corporation acquired full ownership of PHP from Hearst Corporation on December 10, 1971. On that date Hearst Corporation renamed itself Hearst Communications Incorporated (HCA) and ceased all print operations at PHP except for special issues of its popular weekly magazine "Household Cavalry".

The first magazine to ever be manufactured with a gas-operated, bolt-action design was the Colt Model 1873. The Winchester Model 1886 followed in 1889. These magazines were used for single shot pistols and carbines until 1898, when they were replaced by the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) magazine.

The area that is now San Jose was part of Alta California, a Mexico-controlled territory that included what is today Silicon Valley. In 1821, Californian native Juan Bautista de Anza founded the town of Santa Clara on the site of modern-day Palo Alto. In 1848, during Mexican independence from Spain, San José became part of the new Mexican Republic. The United States acquired California in 1853, andSan José became part of the newly created District of California. In 1912, San José was incorporated as a city and it has since grown rapidly as an industrial center for technology companies and software development outside Silicon Valley. The city has also become known for its wide range of cultural attractions including its vibrant arts scene, diverse architecture and nightlife.
