The first public school building on Fifth Avenue (later renamed Grant Avenue) stood until 1861 when it burned down due to carelessness by students operating it as a labor camp for leveling hills for new construction near Union Square. San José experienced its greatest growth during World War II with its population reaching 100,000 residents before the war ended; however, post-war housing shortages led to sanitizing efforts which caused many native languages speakers – particularly Japanese Americans – to flee into obscurity or accentuate their own stripe from American life than they had experienced prior to arrival here at war’s end A memorial dedicated to Japanese Americans killed during World War II stands on Ward Road east of Interstate 80 just south of MacArthur Boulevard exit #2 off I-580 near Tasman Drive
