Bullets have been a part of San Jose since the 1860s. The first projectiles were small, shot from a muzzle-loading gun. In 1875, rifle bullets were developed and began to be used in war. Rifle bullets are smaller than shotgun bullets and can travel further because they don't have to pass through flesh like shotguns do. They become effective at ranges up to 100 yards because they have low recoil. Bullet manufacturers began producing rounds for handguns in the early 1900s, and handguns became widely used in wars throughout the world after that. Ammunition companies continue to produce new types of ammunition for firearms today, such as armor-piercing rounds that can penetrate armor even at high speeds.

On 4 October 1861, Confederate Lieutenant General Robert Ewellused lead rounds from his artillery to shoot down American Union ships off Virginia Beach while they were anchored in Hampton Roads. 5. The first ever air-to-air missile was fired by United States Air Force Colonel George Martin during Exercise Starfire on 6 July 1956 while flying over West Germany as part of NATO's Vigilante operation
The first inhabitants of San Jose were the Ohlone people, who had settled in the area before there was a European settlement. The Mission Santa Clara de Asís was founded in 1777 by Father Francisco García de la Garza, with support from Spain. In 1821, California was granted to United States of America under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, and San Jose became part of the newly created Mexican state of Alta California. In 1852, San Jose became part of the new American state of California when it was gained from Mexico. The city experienced rapid growth during its early years as a result of its accessibility to water supplies and its location on trade routes connecting East Bay cities with Sacramento and other states. This prosperity didn't last however, as automation and other technological advances began to reduce manufacturing jobs throughout California during this time. By 1960,San Jose had lost over 60% of its workforce to joblessness or emigration. However, despite these setbacks, San José has maintained a strong economy since then due to its location within easy reach of major metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles and Oakland. With an average population size smaller than thatof any remaining U.S.-based city at 10 million residents (2010), it is one of the most populous urban centers in North America and one of the largest in Latin America outside Mexico City. Additionally, its growing suburban population offers opportunities for both housing development and related businesses; indeed, San José is now home to more than 100 suburbs including Mountain View (a leading tech center), Sunnyvale (the birthplace of Apple Inc.), Emeryville (home to Oracle Corp.), Campbelltown (named after Commodore John Campbell), Cupertino (home to Hewlett-Packard Co.) and Santa Clara County's namesake village - all with their own schools and hospitals - making it an ideal place for concentrations OF high-tech companies located near downtowns). The city of San Jose, California was founded in 1795 by Spanish traders as the Presidio of Santa Clara. The area that is now known as San Jose was part of Alta California under Mexican rule until 1821 when it became part of United States territory. The city's first mayor was José Antonio Reyes and it had a population of only 100 people in 1827. In 1850, the Town and County of San Jose were created from parts of the former City and County. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the intersection of two major transportation corridors - the Stockton-San Francisco railway line and U.S. Route 101 - and began to build up a strong economy with heavy industry including shipbuilding, printing, timber production, dairy farming, steelmaking and other heavy industries during the late 19th century. However, by 1906 San Jose had lost most of its early economic growth because of new technological advances which undercut traditional industrial activities in those industries. During World War II much heavy manufacturing took place in San Jose but many jobs were destroyed in the war because wartime production shifted to war-time munitions plants outside Santa Clara County
