Prior to Mexican annexation of most of southern California in 1846-47, much of what is now San Jose lay within Spanish colonial jurisdiction or under rancho grants given to American settlers such as Antonio Canizares and Miguel Silva y Cámpora during that time period. In 1850s there were numerous efforts by businessmen in downtown San José to build a railroad through their town; these efforts failed because they did not have backing from local government officials or investors who saw railroads as key components of Manifest destiny movement toward United States territories west of the Mississippi River throughout much of North America – including parts of Silicon Valley – as well as across Central America for the newly acquired lands southward beyond Ulysses S Grant’s Proclamation Of Independence which announced American sovereignty over all Mexico east Of The Rio Grande! In 1857–58 Samuel Morse built a telegraph line between Washington D c & Los Angeles which began service Oct 1st 1860!!!!! This Breakthru For Air Mail To All Parts Of Us Was A Huge Event!!!!!! On Feb 15th 1898 Elihu Root delivered remarks at Stanford University commencement exercises extolling Americas “ greatest natural resources”! These riches had only been discovered recently & could easily be tapped if proper care were taken…. he went on to say That If We Are To Prosper we Will Have To Be Active In Formulating Laws And Building Up Our System: Address Delivered By Mr Elihu Root At Stanford Univ Commencement 98″

The city of San Jose was founded on November 9, 1851 by José Joaquin Mora and his wife María del Carmen. It became a U.S. town on March 14, 1856 when it was annexed by California from Mexico. The first post office in the city opened on October 15, 1857. In 1850, San Jose had a population of 25 people and was located along what is now Main Street. The new town was named after José Joaquín Mora, who laid out the original plan for the town in 1849 while serving as intendent of Baja California Sur Province under Governor Manuel Micheltorena. The town grew rapidly with its location near the southern terminus of the Santa Clara River Valley and access to water supplies grants it an advantage over other Mexican towns that were opening up around them. After Mora's death in 1860, his widow took control of the town and continued to grow it until her death in 1865; at which point power passed to her son-in-law Santiago Baca y Tello. In 1870, San Jose had a population of 400 people and consisted primarily of Italian immigrants working in agriculture or ranching operations; however, manufacturing started to take off soon afterwards thanks to improvements made at nearby El Capitan Mine (now known as Campo de Marte). By 1880, San Jose had reached 1,500 people and was home to several banks and businesses such as Wernher Hogg & Company (later Wernher Hogg & Company Mines), Pacific Telegraph Company (later Pacific Telephone & Telegraph), Northern Mining Company (later Northern Copper) and Southern Railway Company (later Southern Pacific Railroad). There were also several hospitals such as St John's Hospital (founded in 1869) and Mission Indian School (established in1881). On December 12th 1890 San Jose experienced its first major fire when Dr John D Temple suffered burns when he triedto put out a brushfire that had started near Excelsior College; this event is commonly cited as being one of the reasons for Los Angeles becoming an independent city rather than continue sharing same boundaries with San Jose.
