The valley was inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years and the area now known as San Jacinto was first settled by Mexicans in 1821. After Mexican independence from Spain was ratified in 1821, Englishmen began to arrive in what is now San Jacinto County. Richards arrived at Rancho El Presidio and founded the town of San Jacinto on land that had been donated by General Antonio López de Santa Anna to establish a military post. The town became an important farming community with cotton production becoming one of its main industries after the discovery of oil in 1901. By 1914, there were over 20 businesses operating in the town and it boasted a population of 509 people. However, during World War II, San Jacintos role as a troop transport depot made it vulnerable to Japanese bombing raids; as a result, the population decreased significantly during the war period. The town of San Jacinto, California was founded in 1795 by Spanish colonists on the banks of the Colorado River. The area now known as San Jacinto was first populated by the Kumeyaay tribe and later became part of Rancho Santa Barbara, which was granted to Manuel Nieto in 1836. In 1846, Mexican President José Joaquín Alvarado decided to attack Santa Clara County and attacked San Jacinto. The battle resulted in a Mexican victory and it is considered one of the most famous battles in American history. San Jacinto has been called "the birthplace of California" and "the original GPU." It is also home to many interesting historical sites, including Mission San Francisco de Asís, Presidio Real de Monterey (modern day Monterey Peninsula National Historical Park), and Aqueducts Bridge.
In 1846, Mexican traders founded San Jacinto on the southernmost tip of California. The town was named for General Antonio de la Vega y Margarita, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. senator. In 1892, San Jacinto was annexed by Pasadena, making it the second largest city in Los Angeles County after Angelino Heights.
