In 1846, Mission San Jacinto became the first successful mission in California. The Overland Mail Company founded by H.G. Wells traveled through the area and caught wind of the new venture, and decided to donate land for a church on top of the hill. On October 17, 1847, Father José Gomez y Margarita founded Mission San Jacinto with 25 men and élite women from Texas arrived at night to begin construction of what would become one of Christianity's most famous religious centers in North America. The original chapel was only 2 feet high and had no roof; however, due to its location atop a hillock complete with natural resources (grapeseed oil, watermelons), Mission San Jacinto quickly became a thriving center for education and social activities as well as worship services. In 1850-1851, construction began on an even larger chapel that would ultimately be completed in 1858-59. The new chapel was designed by architect Juan Crespo and built using local limestone quarried near present day El Paso County seat El Paso. Completed just in time for the Mexican-American War (1846-48), it served as both an information center for military garrison commanders within General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army besieging Mexico City as well as a place where soldiers could receive their Communion before battle or during field operations. As part of Reform Judaism's efforts to reach out to nonconformist Jews throughout North America,MissionSanJacinto initiated numerous missionary programs which aimed to convert Native Americans into Christianity while also educating them about European ways of life.
