In 1845, the Mexican War ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The United States acquired land in Mexico that included what is now San Jacinto County. In 1848, a party of Americans traveled to San Jacinto to purchase land from the Mexican government. They were met by a group of Mexicans who had been fighting for independence from Spain. The Americans agreed to sell them the land if they could swear not to fight against the Mexicans while living on it. This promise was fulfilled and the Americans named their new settlement San Jacinto after this event.
San Jacinto is located in the heart of California's Central Valley, just a few miles from the Mexican border. The valley was named for the St. John's Eve or San Jacinto Day celebration that took place each year on September 22nd to commemorate the victory over Mexico at the Battle of Palo Alto in 1836. The town was founded by Franciscan monks who arrived in 1849 and began construction on what is now known as Rancho San Jacinto. Located on a tract of land that had been purchased from Marcos de Armas, who had lost an epic battle against Mexico at Alamo Heights, San Jacinto became one of the most important settlements in central California. The town was first populated by Anglo settlers and their Native American guests; however, during World War II Japanese American soldiers were interned here until their release in 1945. In 1948, San Jacinto became an official city and has since grown into one of California's largest cities with over 166,000 residents.Today, San Jacinto is known for its rich history, beautiful architecture and abundant natural resources; it also features a lively community atmosphere that makes it a great place to live and work.

The ruins of San Jacinto are still visible today, although they have been extensively renovated and updated multiple times since their destruction. The town was originally home to about 200 people, but it has since grown to over 1,000 residents. The downtown area is filled withadobe buildings and several churches dating back to the Mission era. In 1846, San Jacinto was the site of a fierce battle that helped earn Mexico its independence from Spain. The Mexican-American War ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which recognized Mexican independence and awarded California to the United States. A year later, on January 6, 1847, General Antonio López de Santa Anna led an army over the mountains from central Mexico and stormed into San Jacinto. The battle resulted in about 400 Mexicans dead and more than 1,500 American soldiers dead or wounded. In 1848, San Jacinto was renamed after General Sam Houston in honor of his victory.
