In 1795, San Jacinto was named for the small town of Jacinto in present-day Texas. The name may have been selected because it was the farthest away from Mexico City and its Spanish population. The first Europeans to visit what is now San Jacinto were two Franciscans, Father Francisco Lopez de Santa Anna and Father Pedro Elizalde. They journeyed from New Spain (Mexico) on April 20, 1700, and arrived at Presidio Rancho San Marcos on October 12 of the same year. After exploring the area, they decided to build a mission here. The Franciscans completed the first building of what would become Mission San Antonio de las Flores on December 3rd of 1795. This mission served as a religious center for many years before being abandoned in 1827 due to lack of funds. In 1836, Don Carlos Menéndez y Vargas took over as governor of Bexar County and ordered that all missions be converted into secular schools. However, only onemission –Mission Santa Rosa –was converted; most others remain traditional Catholic institutions today. On February 14th of 1850, General Antonio López de Santa Anna became president of Mexico after overthrowing President Manuel Juárez during the Mexican Revolution (1857-1861). As president he declared martial law in Bexar County which led to increased violence in the county seat of La Joya which surrounded Mission San Jacinto. On March 10th 1860 gunmen stormed the mission while soldiers were guard duty and killed 26 people including nine priests and six laymen including Fathers Lopez de Santa Anna and Elizalde with several cannons fired by military commanders including José Joaquín Peralta García who would become one of Mexica’s revolutionary leaders later that decade

In 1847, San Jacinto became part of Mexico when the Mexican–American War ended. On February 14,1848, Mexico ceded California to the United States in what is known as the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The following year, San Jacinto was renamed Houston because Houston was then one of the few American cities with a Spanish name. In 1855, Houston married Anna Maria Dickinson and moved to Texas with her. They had two children: Sam Houston (1857-1946) and Cecilia Ann HOUSTON (born 1861).Houston's military career began in 1859 when he served as an artillery officer in General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army during the Mexican-American War. He rose through the ranks to become commander of an infantry brigade in 1862; later that year he was wounded at Monterrey and ordered to seek medical attention in New Orleans. After returning home he resumed his military career by joining General Sam Houston's forces during Texan independence from Mexico on November 16,1865.Houston played an important role in restoring order after the ill-fated Battle of San Jacinto which led to Texan victory over Mexican forces under José Joaquín Alvarado on April 6,. 1865 He returned home for good in October 1865 and resumed his political career by becoming Speaker of the House of Representatives in January 1866 before winning election to that position for a full term in November 1870 defeating Republican challenger James Buchanan McGilpin After leaving office he bought land near Buffalo Bayou and built some temporary homes there before starting what would eventually be called "The Rice Plan" which aimed to provide food for Texans while developing Galveston into a commercial center
