On July 26, 1846, the first gun lights were exhibited in San Jacinto. This event was organized by Captain George Armstrong and ran as a contest between two companies of volunteers. The first firearm to be fired was an old musket that had been converted into a gun light. The Contest was won by Lieutenant John Sutter of Company K of the 4th U.S. Infantry Regiment who successfully discharged his weapon at a distance of about 20 feet from the stand.

The San Jacinto Mountains are a range of mountains located in the southern half of California. The range runs from north to south, with its peak at 2,197 feet (711 meters). It is bordered by the Kern County line on the east, and by Ventura County on the west. The first European to visit San Jacinto was Juan Bautista de Anza in 1795. He named the mountain after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who had fought against Spanish forces during their attempt to take Los Angeles for Spain. In 1821, Mexican President Agustín Lerdo y Guevara designated the range part of Mexico City's domain. This designation made it difficult for Americans to build roads or establish settlements there because it would have been considered an intrusion into Mexican territory. However, American traders and missionaries began arriving in California in large numbers beginning in 1843 and soon started exploring and settlement within Mexican territory near present-day Hacienda Heights. By 1848, about 60 families had arrived at what became known as Encinitas on nearby Clearwater Beach. In 1850, following Mexicano victory over US forces at Buena Vista Hill, Mexico ceded all of California except Alta California to America under Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1861 Californian secessionists attacked Ulysses S Grant's military encampment at Fort Sumter while he was besieging Shiloh; four days later American troops moved into San Jacinto National Monument northwest of town to protect Grant's men from possible attack by Confederate sympathizers living among these troops. San Jacinto is a small town located in the Inland Empire of California, about 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. The name means "sanctuary" in Spanish and refers to the 1621 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican-American War. After Mexico ceded control of California to the United States in 1848, San Jacinto became part of what was now Orange County. The town's modest beginnings can be traced back to 1853, when cattle owners John Brougham and his brother James donated land for a small schoolhouse and church on the edge of town. That same year, San Jacinto Citizens' Club met to decide how they would raise money for improvements necessary for their new community: a well, schoolhouse, churches and other public buildings. In 1857, Don Miguel de la Torre founded la Cueva (the Cave), an adobe ranch that served as headquarters for San Jacinto Valley ranchers for many years. La Cueva was home to important people such as ranch managers Tomás Romero y Ulloa and José Joaquin Crespo; state legislators Averill Harriman and Pio Pico; actors David Niven and Cary Grant; singer Lou Rawls; author Lamar Hunt; movie producer Harry Cohn; writer Clifford Odets; composer Jerome Kern; director Frank Capra.; president Franklin D. Roosevelt.; Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt (); governor Thomas Dewey (); carpenter Edward Ladd (). After World War II brought large numbers of American soldiers home from overseas battlefields, San Jacinto experienced rapid growth due in part to its proximity to Los Angeles military installations at Camp Roberts (later Air Base Ramona) and Monterrey Army Air Field (later Manuel Antonio International Airport). Many job opportunities opened up because defense contractor Boeing began manufacturing planes in nearby Glendale during this time. “When you have Boeing hereabouts,' said Mayor Dick Walters,'you've got enough jobs all around.'” In 1957-58 alone more than 100 businesses were established orchid nurseries near by at one point - another boost to local economy while military production continued unabated. Businesses included trucking companies, saddlers/feeders/carriage drivers, auto dealerships with service departments throughout the building lots/, grocery stores', hair salon's ('Laughingthorn Salon'), doctor's offices (), 'Nurses' Hospitals'/'Dental Clinics', etc., etc... With no real boundaries between town center business districts one could find almost anything one wanted or needed if it wasn't nailed down by zoning regulations! And much like today there were street fairs & carnivals every weekend just like back then!'
In 1821, Mexican land grants were made to the hands of Anglo-Americans. In 1848, San Jacinto was named in honor of General Antonio de la Vega y Aguilar, who led a successful military campaign against the Mexican insurgents under Santa Anna. The town's first post office opened in 1851 and its first school in 1865. In 1893, San Jacinto became an incorporated municipality with a population of 514. The city experienced growth during World War II as it became one of the largest non-military industrial cities in California. prospering as wartime production generated new jobs and increased the size and wealth of the city's population. From 1944 until 1970, San Jacinto was home to two United States Air Force bases: Robertson Air National Guard Base (now Moody Air Force Base) and Kelly Air National Guard Base (now Joint Base San Diego). In 1970, following passage of Proposition 13 by Californians,San Jacinto lost its status as a municipally chartered city and reverted to its pre-Proposition 13 role as an unincorporated rural community with a small population. However, since then the City has seen some redevelopment including several mixed-use projects along Interstate 10 near downtown that have brought much needed economic development to the area.
