The city of San Jacinto, California was founded on November 17, 1836 by American citizens Edward H. Blythe and James Folsom. It became a Mexican territory under the name of Alta California on January 8, 1847. The U.S. claimed it as part of Texas in 1846 and an act to annex it was passed in March 1850. As Mexican territory continued to be held by Mexico until the Taft–Hartley Act of 1934 terminated all remaining Mexican control over California, San Jacinto never achieved full national recognition as a separate municipality. The first white settlers arrived in what is now San Jacinto County in 1827 and began trading with the indigenous people around the nearby Presidio of Monterey. In 18362 Captain Manuel Micheltorena explored the region southeast of Socorro Canyon which led him to believe that there might be gold located at this location but no gold was found until 1861 when prospectors discovered significant amounts near Encinal while working on a irrigation project within Rancho Los Nietos del Rio Seco. The discovery increased incentives for exploration throughout much of California; one consequence was increased traffic through Vallejo on State Route 9 which bypassed Pedernales Pass between El Sobrante County and Sonoma County

This order effectively shut down commerce and social life in much of central Mexico Valley. As a result, many Mexicans who were living or working in rural areas left for Los Angeles or other larger cities before troops arrived to enforce martial law. In 1862, following his election as president of Mexico, Benito Juárez designated San Jacinto as part of newly created Nuevo Laredo County within Texas. Santa Anna refused Juárez's request to be transferred to Texas because he felt that his home state would not have enough resources to support such a large influx of Mexican Americans – an idea that also angered numerous Texans who saw Mexican Americans as extending too much territory into their states without giving back any land or benefits received from previous treaties with Spain. As a result, tension between Mexicans and Texans increased throughout most of 1865 and66; this culminated with an attempted robbery at a local grocery store on November 1st that resulted in three dead and seventeen wounded civilians including several members of Juárez's household staff. Although no charges were brought against anyone involved in the attack, it demonstrated once again how difficult it was for authorities to control an increasingly diverse population living near natural resources like oil deposits beneath modern-day Los Angeles County. Despite these challenges, by 1870San Jacinto had become one of the most important cultural centers within southcentral California due to its rich historical heritage as well as its proximity to major cities like Lubbock (northwest) and Austin (east). Over time, various organizations such as Hispanic Heritage Month Committee/LA Chapter (HMC/LA), Chilton Historical Society (CHS), Pomona Museum District Museum Association/Pomona Hills Branch Museum Committee (PMDMA)/Pomona Hills Branch Library District Board member Joséfina Gonzales Martinez led efforts to promote cultural diversity among Mexican Americans through educational programming and exhibitions relatedto history topics such as art history [ particularly murals], Jalisco culture [ traditional dance ], architecture [including Mission Revival style buildings ], foodways [such as molehill tacos ], musicology [as well as early cantorial music ]and more recently thru digital media
