According to legend, San Jacinto was founded by the Santiago brothers in 1836. The brothers were looking for a place to build their rancho and saw an opening near the old Mission San Gabriel. They named their settlement after the hills in that area where they thought they could find water. The first binoculars were made in San Jacinto in 1857 by Dutchmen who had come to California as missionaries. In 1868, American-born Edward C. Smith became the first person to use what are now called "binoculars." Smith found them useful for watching cattle on his ranch and later developed a business making them and selling them to miners and other outdoor people. During World War II, some of the best eyes of America were used by Allied forces monitoring submarines movements off Japan's coast. Binoculars were also used during various peacekeeping operations around the world during that time period.

The City of San Jacinto was founded on January 17, 1836 by Mexican Americans as the future site of Rancho Jurupa. The town grew rapidly due to the gold rush and in 1851 it became a seaport for goods transported up the Colorado River. By 1870 San Jacinto had a population of over 25,000 people. It was an agricultural center with cotton plantations and cattle ranches, but during World War II it became a significant munitions production plant. In recent years San Jacinto has experienced increased development as a bedroom community for Los Angeles County.
In 1845, the Mexican government ceded San Jacinto to the United States. The U.S. Army garrisoned the fortifications and a town was founded, named after General Sam Houston's victory at Palo Alto on February 6, 1847. The town grew quickly and in 1851 it was renamed Houston. In 1857, Texas statehood was granted to the Lone Star State and Houston became its capital. In 1865, during the American Civil War, hostilities erupted between Union and Confederate forces near San Jacinto and as a result of that battle, much of downtown Houston fell into ruins. Reconstruction began in Houston in 1868 and by 1890 most of downtown had been rebuilt including the new City Hall building which still stands today.
