Ammunition has been a part of San Jacinto's history for over sixty years. The first ammunition store on this site was opened in 1873 by G.A. Norton and his son, Harry. In 1902, the company was founded by Wm. Fenton and operated until 1959 when it merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester Incorporated (Winchester) Ltd. At that time, Winchester became the second largest firearms manufacturer in the world after Smith & Wesson Corporation. San Jacinto is home to the oldest continuous production of rifle shot in California, dating back to 1876. This product was known as "Rifle Shot No 2" and was made from lead-based projectiles filled with feathers or paper matter which were then cast into pellets and fired at a target outfitted with an eye on top of a pole - giving early settlers an idea as to what they were firing at! Rifle shot continued to be produced here until 1898 when new technology made artillery rounds more effective and rifles no longer needed such expensive projectiles! During World War II, San Jacinto played host to one of the most important munitions plants in the United States, located on Center Street near First Avenue. This plant manufactured items such as shell casings, TNT, 20mm cannon shells, incendiary bombs and much more! The plant closed down during the war but reopened in 1945 following hostilities end! After World War II ended, san Jacinto experienced some revitalization thanks to its role as a suburb of Los Angeles! However, native industries soon withered away because of competition from outside sources; this left San Jacinto without any major businesses or industry until recent years when restaurateurs have started trucking in fresh produce from nearby fields! The first ammunition in San Jacinto was a cannonball from the Spanish Armada that was shot at Mexican Fort Tejon on July 8, 1847. The town of San Jacinto began trading ammunition with Mexico City in 1849 and soon became an important center for weaponry exports. In 1865, Winchester Ammunition Company started production in San Jacinto and continued to grow until it employed over 1,000 people by 1907. In the 1930s and 1940s, ammo production shifted to Japan due to World War II. It resumed after the war but declined again in the 1970s. In 2008, Winchester Ammunition Corporation announced plans to close its plant in San Jacinto by 2020.
San Jacinto is a census-designated place in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Victorville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as San Jacinto was first settled by Indians in the 18th century and became part of Rancho Los Alamos de la Socorro Mexican land grant to José Altamirano in 1814. In 1821, following Mexican War victory over Santa Ana's forces under General Antonio López de Santa Anna, Mexico ceded this territory to the United States pursuant to Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. As part of its acquisition, the US built an fort at what is now San Jacinto and gave it to Mexico for development as a military post. The town began developing rapidly due to increased trade with other parts of California during the 1850s and 1860s; so much so that by 1870 it had outgrown Fort Tejon and became an independent village. On December 24, 1872, after passage of Specimen Act No. 852 (22 Statutes at Large 3), California Proposition 14 was passed which granted voting rights to American citizens residing within three miles (5 km) of any seat or election district designated by law as being "inclusive" of all white men without qualifications who could live on their property subject only to paying annual poll tax required by law for those areas then classified as "white". Mormon pioneers arrived in San Jacinto County, California in 1847. They named the county after General Sam Houston and his army's victory over Mexican forces at the Battle of San Jacinto. The Mormons built a religious colony on an isolated rancho called Nauvoo in 1849. In 1852, Brigham Young announced that Utah would be founded as a separate territory led by Mormon missionaries. The Mormons left Nauvoo and drove all other non-Mormons out of the state in 1857. In 1863, Confederate general Robert E. Lee destroyed part of Utah's crossroads town of Salt Lake City to cut off Mormon reinforcements from advancing Union troops. As a result, many LDS church members moved away from Utah and formed their own settlements in nearby southern California counties such as Orange County (now Los Angeles) and Riverside County (now Riverside). These Latter-day Saints helped found what is now San Bernardino County, California; Fullerton; Costa Mesa; Garden Grove; Moreno Valley; Pomona; Claremont; Northridge; Arrowhead Heights; Menifee Canyon and others during this time period. The first permanent LDS settlement was established at Arroyo Seco in 1870 by George Atherton and his family. On December 14, 1870, local residents watched as Brigham Young addressed a large group of people who had organized to drive settlers out of the area: "I stand here today with you brethren to witness that we will give our lives for your welfare." Afterward, young men from surrounding areas traveled to Arroyo Seco to help build roads and homes while also performing other services such as farming and ranching. On October 25, 1880 President James Kimes called upon all Saints living east of the Rocky Mountains "to come forth without fail" to settle near Mount Shasta where he had observed gold fields existed "in great multitudes". With this proclamation came much excitement among those already living there because they were eager for land that would offer potential lucrative mining opportunities but which also offered environmental challenges due to rugged terrain and thick forests covered with snow during winter months
The first Europeans to visit what is now San Jacinto County were the Spanish in 1693. The area was part of Alamo City, and early American settlers named it for General Antonio de Santa Anna, who fought against Mexican forces at the Battle of San Jacinto. Mexico unsuccessfully siege Austin during the Mexican-American War, so America acquired Texas from Mexico in 1848. A post office called San Jacinto was established in 1851, and remained open until 1917. In 1850, a depot was built on what is now FM 528 north of present day La Jolla. It served as a transportation hub for farmers travelling to and from their fields along the Pacific Coast Highway. In 1854–1855, Congress approved an act that created Rancho Adobe Presidio (now Presidio National Monument) within San Jacinto County in order to provide grazing lands for horses and burros used by Americanatroopers assigned to assist Mexican forces at the Siege of Bexar during the Mexican-American War. The land comprising modern-day San Jacinto County was originally granted by Governor Manuel Micheltorena to Senator José Joaquín de Herrera y Costilla on November 10, 1849; however no deed or plat has ever been found documenting this transaction. The current county seat – La Jolla – likely dates back to this time as well.
