On July 16, 1860, rancheros led by Juan Bautista Aguirre attacked Mission Santa Mesa near present-day Murrieta; they were successful in driving out Missionaries from their land and burned their buildings before fleeing back across Highway 1 towards Bakersfield. A small party pursuit ensued but no agreement could be reached so Aguirre withdrew his forces about 100 miles north-west to Sactown where he destroyed an ammunition dump and killed four men before withdrawing again under cover of night on July 17th without inflicting any casualties upon his opponents Aguirre'sraid marked the end of an era for missions in Southern California; mission lands were thereafter acquired through purchase or lease from various ranchers including Antonio Lopez de Mendoza y Coronado who granted Rancho Los Nietos (later Rancho Rincon) east of Temecula to Fray Junípero Serra on December 5th 1868 based on assurances given that he would not build another mission within three miles thereof . By this time most secularized Mexicans living east of Temecula had left for other parts of California while many priests still remained behind to continue operations at Mission Santa Catalina northwest of Temecula/Valencia
