This also led to new housing developments being built such as those at 16th Street and Hoover Avenue. In 1870, John Sutter organized a group of men who would become known as the Save-the-Fires Association to help prevent wildfires from burning through portions of Los Angeles County that were still uncontrolled by government officials. They succeeded in getting legislation passed which banned any wild fires within city limits. One of the earliest flashlights designed specifically for use on horseback was made by George Stephenson and Company (later renamed GE) in 1879 while working on a project called “Tiny Tim” – a horse-drawn wagon with an electric light system that used 12 lead cells arranged into 4 sections each). Initially these lights were used for signaling purposes only but soon became popular among stables and other rural areas where they could be used as part of early morning or evening robberies or burglaries

By 1886, there were over 150 buildings and 40 families living in what is now San Gabriel Valley. The early years of this region’s growth were difficult due to periodic drought and harsh conditions. However, with the arrival of railroad service and major investments from businesses and individuals, business began to pick up and development proceeded at a rapid pace. In 1912, the first significant shopping center opened in what is now downtown LA when General Motors opened their new plant on North Main Street. This led to more people coming into town and helped spur economic development that continues today. San Gabriel Valley has always been an important cultural area for Los Angeles because its history is rich with both Italian-American and Mexican-American cultures. Many famous actors, musicians, athletes, entrepreneurs, politicians and other notable people have originated here including Danny Kaye (actor), Harry Belafonte (singer/songwriter), Betty Ford (politician), Joe Eszterhas (director) and others.
The first permanent residents of San Gabriel County were European explorers who discovered the area in 1795. The first post office was established at San Gabriel in 1827. By 1847, San Gabriel had a population of about 100 people. By 1860, the number of people living in San Gabriel County had increased to 4,000. The county seat was moved from Whittier to Los Angeles in 1871.
