San Gabriel is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 727 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of downtown Los Angeles. The name "San Gabriel" comes from the San Gabriel Valley, which was once part of Hudsons Bay Company land. The area now known as San Gabriel Valley was first populated by Tongva people and Mission Santa Clara de Asís settlers in 1853. In 1874, gold was discovered in what is now San Gabriel Valley and rapid development followed; streets were laid out and businesses erected. By 1880, there were over 100 businesses in town and it had become one of the most important economic centers in southern California. The completion of Los Angeles Union Station in 1913 brought new life to this town with its burgeoning rail industry. In 1925, during World War II, General Electric moved its corporate headquarters from Cleveland to San Gabriel because of an oil shortage in North America. After the war ended, GE returned to San Gabriel but left again when technology changed and new production methods became available outside of Detroit (and other Great Lakes cities). In recent years, growth has been more modest; however, many restaurants still operate within walking distance of central business district entrances throughout downtown Newhall or Encino neighborhoods on both sides of Interstate 5 (I-5 also forms much of the border between jurisdictions). Downtown's revitalization as a mixed-use corridor began with several large projects initiated by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa such as La Brea Tar Pits Park after he took office in 2008; these projects have led to increased retail investment along I-5 southward into Downtown West Side neighborhoods like West Hollywood or Culver City while preserving older commercial buildings along Main Street eastward into Pasadena Hills and Agoura Hills communities near UCLA campuses

As important as economic development was to early settlers, it was agriculture that would continue to be a major focus of life in this region for centuries. Today, many small businesses operate throughout San Gabriel Valley and its surrounding rural areas; some dating back more than 150 years! Major crops include grapes, olives (both processed and whole), almonds (the most popular type grown here), cottonseed oil production (of which Lancaster has become one leading producer), hay production (particularly for pigs), dairy products (espoused by Isreal Dairy) as well as fruits and vegetables such as applesauce, oranges etc., among others.
The first European to travel through San Gabriel Valley was the padre, Francisco Xavier de Alvarado, on July 3rd, 1769. The area now known as California was claimed by Spain in 1821 and became part of Mexico after that time. On September 15th, 1847, the United States purchased Rancho San Gabriel from Mexican officials for $10,000. The property continued to be held by the U.S. government until February 14th, 1850 when it was leased to Isabella Earle Grant for 99 years at $1 per year. When she died in 1893, her daughter donated all of her remaining land holdings in California to the University of Southern California (USC).
