The history of gun magazines in San Gabriel, California began with the founding of the first magazine in 1906. The first magazine was called "The Rifleman" and it was located at 5555 W. Pico Blvd. In 1911, the magazine changed its name to "Guns & Ammo". In 1970, "Guns & Ammo" merged with another magazine, " American Rifleman ", to form the current company name, GunsAmerica. GunsAmerica is now one of the largest firearms retailers in North America with over 2 million square feet of floor space. It operates two stores in San Gabriel and five stores across southern California. Gun magazines have been a part of American society for centuries and their influence can be seen throughout different parts of our country. The first gun magazines were created as a way for people to buy ammunition and supplies together so that they could participate in military campaigns or protect their towns from raiders or other threats. After World War II, people started using magazines more often for personal protection reasons such as carrying handguns around town or keeping shotguns locked up at home. The town of San Gabriel was founded in 1871 by Alvarado Ordonez and his brother Antonio as a small agricultural community on the eastern edge of what is now downtown Los Angeles. The name "San Gabriel" comes from a mission founded by Franciscan friars in 1781 near present-day Irwindale. The valley has been gradually developing since its inception as an agricultural area. In 1870, entrepreneur Nicholas Simonds opened the first commercial establishment in the valley when he established a grocery store at 10th Street and San Vicente Road. By 1887, there were over 100 businesses operating in San Gabriel Valley. Today, many companies such as Apple Inc., Qualcomm Incorporated and Googleplex have their headquarters or major research labs here. One of the more popular tourist attractions in San Gabriel Valley are its churches which can be found scattered throughout the valley. These includeSt John's Catholic Church (built 1886), Our Lady Of Guadalupe Parish Church (1892) and St George's Episcopal Cathedral (1902). Other popular tourist destinations include Pico Rivera National Monument Preserve, Griffith Park and Mount Wilson Observatory.

In 1892, George Smith and James Wilcox patented the first magazineloading firearms – the "Smith & Wesson Model 6". The design was a modification of an earlier patent by John M. Browning, which had been awarded to him in 1868. In 1889, Smith & Wesson introduced their new single-shot model 686 revolver with a magazine that could hold up to 10 rounds.
The city of San Gabriel, California was founded on January 24, 1871 by donation from Jesuits. The name comes from the three hills that make up the town: San Jacinto Hill, San Gabriel Hill, and Mount Baldy. The first post office in San Gabriel opened on December 1, 1872. By 1888, the population had grown to 3,811 residents. In 1908, an electric street light system was introduced in San Gabriel and it became a part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area in 1913. During World War II (1939-1945), the city was home to over 50% of Los Angeles' automotive production. In 1948, voters approved a $4 million bond issue for development projects in downtown and other areas of the city center which would eventually become known as Midtown LA. Manufacturing companies such as Boeing and Kaiser Permanente relocated their plants to Midtown LA during this time; however many job losses occurred due to automation and competitive pressures from neighboring cities with larger populations. In 1984, City Councilwoman Diane Ravitch proposed that the name be changed from "San Gabriel" to "Los Angeles". However at a meeting held on October 7th only five council members attended due to a scheduling conflict; all but one opposed changing the name citing cultural reasons for keeping it unchanged including its connection with Mexico City's historic role in Mexican-American history. On November 11th voters passed a ballot measure overturning Ravitch's proposal with 60% support becoming Los Angeles' new official name without input or debate from either councilmember or citizens who advocated for retaining "SanGabriel."
The first European to visit San Gabriel was Juan Bautista de Anza in 1778. The area now known as San Gabriel Valley was part of Rancho Los Nietos, a Spanish land grant given to Francisco Alvarado in 1821. A mill built by Alvarado in 1834 became the first cotton gin on the West Coast. In 1857, a group of Mormon settlers from Salt Lake City founded what is now called Utah County. In 1871, the California Southern Pacific Railroad extended its line from Lodi through San Gabriel Valley and began passenger service between Pasadena and El Paso. The company also erected a station at Mission Viejo for passengers and goods arriving from points north. The valley became an important transportation center with trains running south to Long Beach and north to Sacramento. Businesses grew along the railroad, including stores, restaurants, and breweries that supplied Los Angeles with beer. In 1910, when Interstate 10 was completed through the valley, business growth slowed and traffic increased on winding streets lined with warehouses until they were replaced by freeway arteries in the late 1990s
