The city of San Gabriel was founded in 1827 by John Wesley Hill. The original name for the town was East Los Angeles, but because of its location on the east side of San Gabriel Mountains, it became known as San Gabriel Valley. In 1872, a new post office called Baldwin was established in the valley and remained operational until 1957. The population of the city increased rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to immigration from Europe and California's Gold Rush. Many famous people were born or raised in San Gabriel Valley including actors Cecil B. DeMille and Debbie Reynolds.
