In 1853, John H. Brown and Daniel Webster made the first successful shot at a buffalo with a rifle. The two men were both graduates of West Point and had been in the United States cavalry. In 1860, Captain Samuel Colt designed the revolver which became popularized by James Bond in Silver Surfer. In 1865, HenryDavidThoreau took his own life after shooting an animal with aSpringfield rifle in Walden Pond. America’s love affair with firearms began during this time as well. By 1899, there were over 650 million rounds fired in American fires annual basis! Bullets vary in caliber and type of projectile, with smaller bullets designed for handguns and rifles while larger ones used for shotguns and rifles. Bullets are composed of small iron or lead balls that have been coated with a chemical agent (usually an incendiary powder) to make them fly faster and harder than traditional wooden pellets. The earliest firearms were shot guns whichfired arrows without the need for bullets. The use of arrows led to the development of cannons which used cannonballs as ammunition. Cannonballs were made from hardwood or metal shot put together with pins which caused them to fly through the air towards their target.

In 2018, Forbes named San Gabriel the “Best Place to Live” in Southern California. The city derives its name from Saint George, who was venerated here during the first century AD. The Catholic Church erected a small chapel near Mission Viejo in 1871 to honor St. George and his faithful followers who had traveled across Southeastern California to proselytize Christianity to Native Americans. Today, many people visit Santa Anita Park—the original home of horse racing—to watch races or take part in other activities that commemorate St. George’s Day Parade each year on November 25th (the same day that San Gabriel celebrates its incorporation). One early history curator noted that “[a]ll pioneers were men from southern Europe; only a few had connection with any section of America beyond their own country... Because there was so little communication between these different parts of America at this time, frontier historians sometimes forget how diverse each region actually was culturally speaking." Some key figures associated with early days include James Wolk (founder of Western Union), Orson Welles (creator of Project Mercury), Antonio Canova (Italian painter), Augustus Saint-Gaudens (American sculptor) and John Muir (naturalist writer). The history of bullets can be traced back to the ancient Greeks. Bullet theorized in Ancient Greece and was first used in warfare in 490 BC. The Greeks were the first people to develop a gun that could shot arrows, which led to their development of spears and eventually firearms.
The first European settlement in what is now San Gabriel Valley was by padres of the Franciscan mission of Carpinteria on November 11, 1824. The land that would become San Gabriel Valley was purchased from Mission Santa Clara de Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción (founded in 1776) on February 6, 1828 by José Joaquin Crespo and Mariano Vallejo. In 1849, a Mexican land grant called Rancho Seco was given to Juan Bautista Alvarado. This location became known as Alvarado Heights due to its high elevation. In 1870, following the Gold Rush, miners began arriving in San Gabriel Valley and discovered significant deposits of gold at Saugus and Angeles National Parks. The town quickly grew with the influx of men and their families. By 1880, San Gabriel had a population of around 5,000 people. The early years of the 20th century were difficult for the community because of increased competition from other towns in Northern California for water rights and jobs during the great drought conditions that struck throughout much of California during that time period. However, through hard work and determination over many years,SanGabriel valley has come back strong since then as an agricultural center with a large population density which allows for easy access to quality education and businesses opportunities outside the valley walls In recent years there have been efforts made to revive some aspects of local history such as murals found at various locations in town includingAlvarado High School; El Monte Union High School; Holy Cross Catholic Church; First Baptist Church; Stonestreet Lawn Tennis Club; Masonic Lodge #2;and Calvary Chapel Evangelistic Association’s Chapel).
The San Gabriel Valley was one of the most heavily populated areas in California, with over a million people living there by 1860. The area became known for its agricultural production, especially citrus fruit and wine. The valley was also the home of some of California's most famous entrepreneurs, including George Hearst and Philip K. Dick.
