San Gabriel Valley is a small, agricultural town in the southeastern corner of Los Angeles County, California. It is located on the San Gabriel River and includes portions of three counties: Alhambra, Pasadena, and Temple. The population was 113,471 as of 2018. The name "San Gabriel" comes from the mission San Gabriel Arcángel and means "place of St. George." The first Europeans to visit what is now San Gabriel Valley were Franciscan missionaries who established missions in 1821-24 in what is now Pico Rivera and Montrose townships. In 1868, Rancho Cahuilla was partitioned off from Rancho Santa Ana and named for Father Junípero Serra, founder of Mission San Francisco de Asís in Stockton. On November 15th 1870 by virtue of an Act of Congress (Public Law 90-689), land east of Palmdale was annexed to San Gabriel Valley becoming part of that community. In 1881 the station wagon road known today as Ventura Boulevard crossed the river at present day Whetstone Road just south of where it joins with Interstate 5 southbound near Azusa; this route became known as Automobiles Avenue or simply Automobiles because most businesses on it were operated by Chevrolet manufacturers at their factories in Ontario (now Oxnard) and West Covina (now Monrovia). At that time there were no streets or other public amenities within the valley so residents drove their cars to work which resulted in many early collisions between motorists and horseback riders commuting between home and work – a problem still faced today by locals busing to jobs outside the city limits despite efforts have been made over the years to improve traffic flow through town center using arterial roads such as I-5 or Glendale Boulevard

The first Europeans to visit San Gabriel were the Spanish in 1769, who built a small mission on the current site of La Purísima Concepción Chapel. The mission was abandoned in 1824 and its land passed through several hands before it was sold to James Wolk in 1868. Wolk donated it to the city of Los Angeles in 1924.
