San Gabriel is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 1,055 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and was historically one of the most populous cities in Southern California. The name "San Gabriel" comes from Spanish meaning "the small town on the mountain." In 1853, landowner Andrew Noyes donated 160 acres (50 ha) of what is now San Gabriel Valley to establish what would become San Gabriel Valley National Park. The park includes portions of present-day Pasadena and Monterrey. From its founding until 1915, San Gabriel Valley was primarily agricultural with citrus production being the primary crop. However, as new industries developed in southern California such as electronics and aerospace, many people began moving into San Gabriel Valley and other parts of Southern California during this time period. Many manufacturing companies established themselves there including Emerson Radio Corporation (later Hughes Aircraft), Mattel Inc., Intel Corporation and Toshiba Heavy Industry Limited Company Ltd.. In 1990, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced that he would seek to change the name of the city to honor Mexican revolutionary José Lopez de Santa Anna y Costilla who fought for independence from Spain in 1821 and died at battle of Buena Vista Hill only weeks before Mexico's first presidential election that year;Villaraigosa's campaign slogan was "Lopez de Santa Anna: A Pioneer in Our Time". On November 5th 1990 voters upheld Villaraigosa's request by voting overwhelmingly to change their CityNameMuseum from SAN JOSE TO JÚSÉ LOPEZ DE SANTANA Y COSTILLA Museum

San Gabriel is a city in Southern California and the seat of San Gabriel Valley. It is bordered by Los Angeles County to the east, Pasadena to the north, and Fullerton to the west. The population of San Gabriel was 145,603 as of 2010. In 1871, Presidio Colonel James P. Kearny's Battalion composed of 11 Californian riflemen and 4 artillerymen numbered 3 officers and 53 men including 2 lieutenants under Kearny; he had been called up from his regiment at Fort Tejon after its commander deserting with his company northwest of Bakersfield. The battalion arrived on October 14th at Sutter's Fort (now Old Town) where they were met by Sergeant John Copley who led them into town that night for their first encampment since leaving Mexico City 10 days earlier. The fort served as an encampment until November 12 when General Antonio Lopez reported that hostilities had ceased between Mexican forces and US forces near Bakersfield so all troops in Sutter's Fort were ordered back home except for Kearny’s battalion which continued deployment northeastward towards Stockton awaiting orders from General Lopez not to engage Mexican forces again. On December 6th Captain George Armstrong Smith detailed 21 Volunteers from Company K1 9th Infantry Regiment New York State Militia to relieve Kearney’s Battalion while also providing security for Mission Santa Clara de Asís (founded in 1739). The volunteer troop reached Sutter's Fort on December 11th but found only about 60 men present including Captains Armstrong Smith and Isaac Watts who had left previous day for mission site unknown having received word from Captain Cook that there was no hostile force nearby. So Lieutenant Colonel James Hahn commandeered one cannon from Captain Armstrong Smith’s unit leading party returned January 1st 1872 when detachment traveled via stage overland reached Mission Santa Clara de Asís located about 7 miles southeast of original settlement post abandoned in 1863 due primarily to lack of water resources however new settlement began construction shortly thereafter around temple complex circa 1870 usingsurplus land purchased by secular church) during early 19th century due largely Agrarian Real estate boom following Gold rush era conversions/additions characteristic of large Utopias such as Benicia & Sacramento These missions became self-reliant agricultural communities supported mainly by horticulture crops produced on Missions lands although missionaries continued efforts at evangelism particularly toward Anglo settlers On October 14, 1871, presidio colonel james paul kearny's battalion composed mostly american riflemen along with 4 artillerymen set out exploring explore new territory Genl Antonio Lopez reported there hostilities stopped so all troops at sutter's fort were ordered home except captain gareth armstrong smith'S unit which continued deployment northeastward towards stockton awaiting orders from general lopez not to engage mexican forces again captain john copley took over command 1st battalion arrivingcember 6th thanksgiving day 1830 sergeant john coleman led them into town that night for their first encampment since leaving Mexico City 10 days earlier
In 1847, the San Gabriel Valley was included in the Mexican state of Alta California. In 1851, it became a part of the United States of America. The area now known as Santa Clara County was formed from portions of Alta California in 1855.
