On April 29, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln delivered his inaugural address from Montgomery's Hotel in front of State House Square before turning south onto Powell St., also known then as Fort Scott Road northwest of today's Embattled Streets intersection with Kearny Plaza Drive). By 1870s most people living in San Francisco had moved away or wereigrant workers who continued to live there until after World War II when it became an all-white suburb known as North Beach
