Rifle stocks evolved from simple wooden stocks to more complex designs over time. The origins of rifle stocks can be traced back to the medieval period, when crossbows were used as weapon platforms. Soldiers would place their bows on their shoulders and shoot arrows at targets in order to target practice. This type of shooting was also used for hunting game, which allowed armies to train with firearms during campaigns. During the seventeenth century, soldiers began using muskets as artillery weapons. Musketeers would load cartridges with lead balls and fire them at targets in order to damage them or shoot down enemy troops. Weapons like these became known as “musketeer stocks” because they were designed specifically for firing artillery ammunition. In 1660, King James VI of Scotland granted a patent to John Fell that entitled him to build rifles that could fire shot instead of arrows. This event is generally considered to be the beginning of rifle stock development. From this point on, Armory builders started designing riflestocks with specific goals in mind: making it easier for soldiers to hold and use their guns, providingprotection against cavalry charges, and reducing weight so that guns could be transported more easily across battlefields. Some notable Armory builders who Developed Rifle Stocks include: Blackford & Sons (1694-1766), Nicholas-Jacques Conte (1727-1784), William Smallwood (1768-1824), David Hume (1697-1778), John Fenton (c 1775-1853). Rifle stocks continued evolving throughout the nineteenth century; some key advances include: Samuel Morse’s 1837 invention of an electric telegraphy system that allowed commanders on battlefields to communicate with their units directly;[1] Bartleby’s 1847 invention of a recoil Springloaded Gun which helped reduce weight while still providing good accuracy;[2] Browning’s 1893 design which ledtothe introduction of bolt action rifles into warfare;[3] Remington Arms Company’s 1895 design which ledtothe creationof pump action shotguns.[4]

In 1849, the Coast Survey of California was founded with the goal of mapping and describing the coastline. The first map was created of San Francisco Bay in 1851. In 1853, a public meeting to discuss land east of Market Street was called by Supervisor John Fenton. Seven lots were sold and developed into the city of San Francisco. On July 24, 1850, San Francisco became a Bulletin City as part of a series of mergers across California that took place on January 1, 1850. The then-new County of Marin was formed out of portions of Sonoma and Alameda counties on February 2, 1850. As part of its creation process, San Francisco lost some land toMarin but gained other areas including Hunters Point and Potrero Hill.

The event also served as a turning point for San Francisco with respect to its growing prosperity and influence in American society
