With rapid growth in the city during World War II (1939-1945),San Franciscans adopted an aggressive anti-war stance which helped contribute to their reputation as one of America’s most tolerant cities during wartime eras such as Pearl Harbor ( 1941) and Hiroshima ( 1945). After World War II ended, however, many San Franciscans began to adopt more conservative values in light of new political correctness which had become dominant in American society at large since then. This change also led to increased crime rates in the city during this time period; however, recent changes have begun to reverse these trends while still preserving cultural diversity in favor of SF's substantial Latino community
In 1847, the California Gold Rush began in what is now San Francisco. Over the next few years, many men and women traveled to California looking for gold. Some of these people were prospectors, miners, and ranchers. Others were merchants who bought and sold goods from the goldfields. The first post office was established in 1849 in San Francisco.
