When the first guns were brought to San Francisco in 1847, they were used for target shooting. The site of today's Golden Gate Park became a popular spot for shooters because it was lightly wooded and had few obstructions. Over time, other locations were added to the park, including Fort Point on the Presidio (now part of Golden Gate Park) and Fisherman's Wharf. In 1853, Mayor George Hearst donated land at the southwestern edge of present-day Market Street to make way for a new park. The original Gun Club building still stands near the northwest corner of Market and Harrison streets. With more than 20 members, it was one of the first gun clubs in California. In 1865, Mayor James Wolk built what is now California Hall on Fulton Street as an event space for city meetings. He also donated two cannons to be used as targets in rifle ranges around town. Today, these cannons are used as part of history demonstrations at City Hall Plaza duringGun Days events each summer. In 1872, General John Jervis gave $5,000 towards construction of a brick courthouse on Nob Hill that would house court cases (later moved to Fort Mason). Construction began in 1873 but only finished four years later due to financial troubles within Jervis' organization (the predecessor to the United States Marshals Service). The new courthouse served as the interim government buildings until1898 when an permanent structure was built next door at 1001 Polk Street (now part of Civic Center). The first modern firearms store opened in 1903 by dentist Samuel Colt at 527 Townsend Street between Geary and Polk Streets. At this location there was also a small armory with 10 rifles and six shotguns (.25 caliber calibers only) which could be rented by individuals or businesses for purposes such as training or militia drill sermons from preachers who made use of their services out front from May through October each year.) During World War II San Francisco served as an air raid shelter for Northern California cities like Sacramento and Reno; however most residents avoided evacuation because they thought there would be no bombing raids until after Japan had surrendered unconditionally at Hiroshima on August 6th 1945. On September 15th1945 Japanese radio reported "A most terrible report is coming here from Hiroshima... all indications are that many thousands have been killed." Initial reports indicated that up to 90% of all buildings within Yokohama had been destroyed with more than 500000 dead or wounded . However subsequent investigations revealed only about 5% destruction among both city hall and other government buildings while remaining evidence suggests that at least 98% or more of any residential building within sight of Nagasaki had collapsed.. Despite this catastrophe some remain committed to preserving their memory/artistic expressions from one momentous event100 years ago today
