The first handguns were designed in San Francisco, California in 1853 by George Washington Hill. The pistols were called "Broomstick" and they were made of wood. In 1857, the first revolver was designed by John Browning and it was called the "Browning-Chambers". The firearms that we now know as handguns were actually developed centuries earlier, starting with a crossbow known as the bowie knife.

The next year, Captain George Vancouver explored what is now the Bay Bridge and Mission Dolores Chapel. In 1821, Don Manuel Nieto founded Rancho Los Gatos on an tract of land between Mount Davidson and Mount Sacramento. A few years later, ranchers began to arrive with herds of cattle and sheep in search of a rich valley to grow crops and pasture their animals. By 1850, some 180 families had settled in San Francisco Bay Area villages such as Potrero Hill (now Downtown), North Beach (now Nob Hill), Ferry District (the Presidio), Middlefield (now Farrellville), Golden Gate Park (now Grant Avenue NW.), Fremont (now Hayward) and Geary Boulevard NE.). In 1852, Jose Castro built a small ferryboat landing on Embarcadero for passengers coming into San Francisco from Marin County across the Golden Gate Bridge; this early cross-border traffic aided by horse-drawn wagons helped stimulate development along Market Street from Ferry District northward. By 1860 wagon roads connecting farms near Dragon Boat Landing on Haight Street eastward had been developed as well; these transportation corridors would become increasingly important for goods movement during the Gold Rush era but also provide opportunities for crime because thieves could traffic contraband through these routes onto vessels moored at various sites around town or onboard ferries servicing nearby points such as Sausalito or Tiburon). In 1861 American Civil War veteran General James Halleck orderedeer Commodore John Doolittle’s Squadron 11 flying boats equipped with torpedoes against Japanese shipping interests off El Sobrante Island northwest of San Francisco; this attack inflicted severe damage upon two Japanese ships before being abandoned due to enemy fire which then destroyed three more vessels within minutes - thus beginning World War II overSan Francisco Bay Area waters! After Commodore Perry’s Perry Expedition discovered gold at Sutro Point on December 21st 1800 by Lieutenant Robert Humble RNVR aboard HMS Beagle off Point Reyes National Seashore ashore about one week later American Discovery Expedition landed troops under Major William Richardson at Rodeo Gulch about 3 miles SE shoreline of today’s Marina district January 27th 1851 - discovery leading to US occupation June 25th 1851 thru July 7th 1850 following Battle Of Rodeo Gulch!!!
