The history of firearms in San Francisco begins with the first pistols and rifles being manufactured here. The area was inhabited by Native Americans for centuries, and during the late 1800s, gold rush fever led to a surge in immigration and settlement. One of the earliest European immigrants to set foot in San Francisco was José Altuve, who arrived on October 7, 1849. He purchased two shotguns from Captain Folsom at Coit’s Place. By 1852, there were over seventy-five gunsmiths operating out of what is now known as the “Old City” district. Many of thesemiths were supplied by Eli Whitney & Sons (today part of American Armory). During this time period, pistols were being made from frame only to obtain a higher degree of accuracy and performance; frames had not been used for many years before then. As early as 1855, Supervisor J.B. Morse began stocking rifle ammunition at his store on Market Street. In 1860, both Mayor George Jones and Supervisor John Phelan authorized the installation of three cannons on California Barracks within twenty-four hours after receipt of news that Confederate forces had landed at Vallejo Bay while attacking San Francisco warships off shore! This event became known as “The Battle Of Alcatraz” because all but one Confederate ship was sunk! During World War II (1939-1945), approximately 170 buildings in downtownSan Francisco were utilized for military purposes including 10 barracks/ Holding pens for horses and dogs etc., Ammunition storage yards (including an underground bunker where shells could be stored until ready to use), Mess Hall (for officers), Technical School (for mechanics) etcetera…. In 1945 following Japan’s surrender%, most of these buildings reverted back to civilian use again….. Amazingly none resulted in any serious damage however 1 case did result in a window being smashed which required replacement! After World War II ended, firearms production came to a natural end due largely to technological advancements such as automatic weapons which gave shooters an ADVANCE over their predecessors when it came to firepower….. However some old guns still remain sling shots today……………San Francisco has long been home to some incredibly talented gunsmiths who have continued producing quality firearms ever since……….

When Mexico lost its independence in 1848, much of what is now San Francisco became part of U.S. Territory Westvaco; however, a small section including Chinatown remained under Mexican jurisdiction.On July 8, 1850, a group of Americans led by Commodore John Doolittle sailed on USS Beale up the Sacramento River and claimed possession of land east of the Golden Gate Bridge for America; this claim included what is now downtownSan Francisco and parts of today's neighborhoods such as Bernal Heights and Nob Hill
