In 1847, the first attempt was made to establish a permanent settlement in California. The founders of San Francisco were acting on behalf of the Mexican government, which had granted them land as part of an indemnity for their losses during the Mexican-American War. By 1875San Francisco had reached its peak as an entertainment destination with large theaters and squares such as Market Street and Franklin Street filled with shoppers before darkness set in each night. However, over time it lost some of its popularity due to issues such as high crime rates and competition from nearby cities that enjoyed easier access to resources such as water AND air quality (see below).
