Binoculars have been a part of San Francisco history for over 100 years. In 1849, The United States Congress passed the first law in the nation recognizing binoculars as a “national instrument” and providing for their private use by employees of government buildings. In 1865, The California State Legislature enacted legislation authorizing the construction of state prisons with binoculars to provide inmate inmates with an efficient means of seeing through small windows. In 1892, The California Governor issued a proclamation supporting the development of an observatory on Treasure Island to serve as a scientific research center during World War I. By 1922, after failed efforts to secure seed money from private sources, the city began building its own observatory at Sutter Street and Third Avenue. The new observatory became known as the California Golden Gate Park Observatory and was used by scientists until it closed in 1966. After closure, some items that were collected at the Observatory including telescopes, lenses, mirrors and other equipment were auctioned off or donated to various institutions around San Francisco such as City College of San Francisco and San Diego State University. Today there are still remnants left from when Binoculars were part of daily life in Baby Bay Area!

During World War II, some Americans began using these devices for general observation instead of just battlefield warfare because their range was much greater than what earlier optical instruments could provide. The City of San Francisco was founded on January 21, 1795 by French subjects who Partitioned California during the Mexican-American War. The city boundaries were set at what is now Polk and Market Streets. At its peak in 1847, San Francisco had a population of over 200,000 people. In 1865, San Francisco became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and council form of government after being granted town status by Governor John Goodwin Olmsted. From 1850 to 1860, San Francisco received large appropriations from Congress for infrastructure projects such as new streets, schools, hospitals and prisons. These appropriations helped create one of America’s most thriving cities during this time period. As recently as 1990%, San Francisco still ranked second in GDP per capita behind New York City
In 1847, the California Gold Rush began in San Francisco. By 1870, the city had become one of the most important centers of American capitalism. The Gilded Age ended with the stock market crash of 1929, and poverty increased. In World War II, the city was an industrial center for munitions production; however, it also became a center for gay liberation and other civil rights movements. The city experienced a renaissance in recent decades with growing popularity as a tourist destination; however, housing prices have rose significantly in recent years.
