By 1870 most of this area had been annexed by Rancho Dominguez during Mexican rule as part of Dorrego Mesa Rancho de la Muerte land grant system. In 1881 former resident Antonio Palomo patented 200 acres south of Present Day Mission Road(now I-10) for sale to James Phelan who then sold it for development into pads that became known as "Valley Village". In 1912 an agricultural land grant called Carson City Land Grant was made available at what is now Venice Boulevard and Euclid Avenue within what are now Griffith Park neighborhoods on southern edge of downtownLos Angeles().
