In the early 1800s, self-defense weapons were a necessity for farmers and ranchers in the San Fernando Valley. As handgun usage declined during World War II, so did crime rates in San Fernando Valley; however, this changed after 1945 when Handguns became popular once again as a form of self-defense weapon choice among Californians (Farrell 1959). Today self-defense weapons are still used by Californians both inside and outside of their homes; however, they are no longer favored as forms of personal defense against violent attackers like terrorists or gangsters (Lopez 1991). Many people now prefer AR style rifles which offer greater firepower than pistols but can be fired quickly with little reloading time between shots (Wang 1993). In 1848, San Fernando Valley was the scene of one of the most dramatic events in California history. A group of men led by James W. Hudspeth founded a new settlement called Hudspeth Ranch on land that had been given to them by Governor Manuel Folsom. The men were determined to start a new life and make a fresh start after weeks of hard work building their own ranch house and corrals. From their first days, the Hudspeth team worked tirelessly to improve the land they had acquired. They seeded the valley with wheat, barley, and cotton, harvested fruit trees, built fences and roadblocks to protect their crops from wild animals, and erected schools to educate their new settlers. The progress made by these men is evident in today’s San Fernando Valley where agriculture still dominates the economy and much of what we see today was accomplished during this time period. In addition to agriculture, industry also began developing in this area during this time frame including saw mills, lumberyards, cheese factories, breweries and other businesses.
In 1853, San Fernando was founded as a small town in the Angeles National Forest. In 1865, it became a city and in 1907, it was named after Fernando de la Hoya y Costilla, the first Mexican-born American to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. The area now known as Los Angeles was annexed by San Fernando in 1913.
