San Fernando Valley was once a well-to-do area of Southern California, until the Gold Rush of 1849 brought heavy poverty and social unrest. The land now known as San Fernando Valley was first inhabited by the Tongva people, who called it Yuma. In 1848, Spanish missionaries founded Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico in what is now Los Angeles. When Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, ranching began to take hold in the valley and soon there were large areas of undeveloped land. In 1869, Alvarado became California’s governor and decided to make the valley his new capital. He named the area San Fernando Valley after himself and laid out a town on what is now Ventura Boulevard in honor of his father-in-law, Don Carlos de Alvarado y Pacheco. Over time, other officials followed Alvarado’s lead and established towns in various parts of the valley: Signal Hill (1872), North Hollywood (1875), West Hills (1879), Thousand Oaks (1889), Sherman Oaks (1902) and Van Nuys (1904). Today most of these towns are gone or have been renamed; only North Hollywood remains unchanged since its incorporation into Pasadena in 1912. The early days of san FernandoValley development were expensive and difficult due to prohibitive costs associated with building roads, water supplies and housing for settlers. However, as growth continued throughout the 19th century, things changed for san FernandoValley residents when transportation became more accessible and reliable. Railroads brought goods and passengers directly to Santa Monica Bay from points eastward; this increased access to farmland near Los Angeles while reducing travel times between cities. As a result, many small businesses opened up along Ventura Boulevard which made it easier for locals to buy goods they need without leaving their homes

In 1850, Luke Aspinwall homesteaded land near present-day Jogjakarta Road in the valley; it would be his distinction as the first American citizen to live within city limits of Los Angeles.
