San Fernando is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 117,055 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Los Angeles County and the second most populous city in Southern California after Pasadena. The metropolitan area of San Fernando covers all of Orange County and parts of Riverside and Ventura counties. The first European to visit what is now San Fernando Valley was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 15, 1769, during his exploration of southern California for the Spanish Crown. He named it La Rambla de las Animas because he thought it reminded him of a running stream in Ireland. In 1819, Mexican land grantee Agustín Cisneros established Rancho Santa Anita on an extensive parcel of land that lay east-southeast of Mission Viejo and west-northwest of San Fernando Valley. This rancho included much of present-day Santa Monica Boulevard and Venice Boulevard. In 1835, Mexican nationals Elias Pacheco and José Joaquin Morral founded Rancho Antelope near present-day Olvera Street in nearby Baldwin Hills; this property also included present-day Hollywood Cemetery (now part of Hollywood Park). In 1858, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill on the Arroyo Seco near modern day Northridge; this led to a period known as "Gilded Age" for Californias Gold Rush era economy because so many people from out West sought to capitalize on the discovery by buying tracts or mining rights in Northern California's new goldfields. The town started forming around these new settlements with names like Russian Hill (1859), Germanna Heights (1860), Fillmore Heights (1862), Irishtown (1863), Greektown (1865) etc.. These towns rapidly grew due to their proximity to various mines and other businesses as well as easy access to roads, railroads and water supplies. By 1870 there were over 1,000 residents living in Russian Hill/Germanna Heights/Irishtown/Greektown alone while Fillmore Heights had over 2 thousand residents! By 1880 onlyRussian Hill/Germanna Heights/Irishtown remained while Fillmore Heights had more than 4 thousand residents! The rapid growth continued through the late 19th century with names changes including Boscoville(1900), Carthay(1911), Franklin Grove( 1912), Prospect Park( 1913), Winnetka( 1914) etc.. However by 1920 only Russian Hill/Germanna Heights/Irishtown remain while Fillmore Heights had almost 6 thousand residents! During World War II much housing was built just outside Russian Hill Village which became known as Victory Garden after U.S Army General George S Patton's headquarters moved there from Chandler several months before D-Day Normandy Landing on June 6th 1944 during World War IIOperation Overlord . Many high ranking American commanders used Victory Garden apartments such as Dwight Eisenhower who lived here from 1942 until his death in 1954 In 1957 SANFORD CITY TOWNSHIP was created from portions surrounding Russian Hill Village following Measure Eighty five which passed unanimously by both City Councilmember James Kappeler & Mayor James Hahn

By 1920, San Fernando had become one of Southern California's most diverse cities with a population that included people from all walks of life. San Fernando experienced significant growth following World War II as many families relocated to the area due to wartime shortages of food and housing. In 1970, Mayor Jerry Brown declared San Fernando "the City That Could" because it had made great strides since then both economically and socially. Over time, however, social tensions have arisen as gentrification has begun to occur in areas such as Downey Village and North Hollywood while poverty has persisted in some sections of town.
