In 1876, George Armstrong Custer and his Seventh Cavalry was engaged in an epic battle against the Sioux at Fetterman's Ranch. The battle left three of Custer's officers dead, including his commanding officer, Colonel John Chivington. In the days following the engagement, men from throughout California began traveling to San Fernando Valley to witness history in person. Latino residents make up more than 60% of the population; African Americans make up more than 10%; Asians make up about 5%; and Europeans (mainly Italian) make up about 3%. The valley has also become increasingly diverse with respect to its social fabric: Ethnic tensions have not typically been as intense as they are today outside of Downtown L.A.; nevertheless some ongoing controversies exist that demonstrate how difficult it is for different groups to coexist harmoniously throughout this large geographic area without becoming entrenched into feuding or antagonizing behavior
In 1847, the Mexican state of Alta California was founded by Juan Bautista de las Casas. The area that is now San Fernando Valley became part of the new state, and in 1852, it became a part of Los Angeles County.
