The community also contains some notable landmarks: The finished domes of two large churches – both built between 1924 and 1928 – are still on view today; nearby Mount Wilson can be seen from almost everywhere within town limits; as well as numerous small shops and restaurants clustered around several downtown streets.

The town of San Fernando was founded in 1853 by surveyors working for the Southern Pacific Railroad. The post office was named San Fernando in 1865, and the town became a city on December 4, 1870. It was considered part of Los Angeles County until it was annexed by Pasadena on February 14, 1915.
