In 1869, San Fernando Valley was named for the Spanish Mission San Fernando de la Laguna. The mission was founded in 1777 by Father Stephen Elliott and Mama Pilar Alcala. Racing continued at Santa Anita until 1865 when California became a Ulysses S Grant state and all races were transferred to Los Angeles. In 1932 harness racing began at Santa Anita with Citation winning the inaugural running of the race off track over Older Lady who finished second that year behind Harness Horse Club stable’s Arabian filly gelding broodmare Honeymooner A new grandstand was built in 1937 which hosted many major events such as the Hollywood Bowl Championship Game between USC Trojans football team and UCLA Bruins football team In 1957 (the first year with an automatic playoff system), Citation won one of four races held atSanta Anita after her owner John Foyt retired her due to age restrictions set by then-racing association president Harry Byrd Jr On October 10th 1960 Citation was raced against older sister Warthin’s Well (now owned by Bob Cimino) over a distance of six furlongs at Hollywood Park Racecourse after which both horses were disqualified returning them to their owners . On May 25th 1961 Citation competed against Older Lady again but this time she failed to make it out of her paddock before being euthanized due to old age On December 21st 1962 Citation Breeders Association renewal auction resulted in purchase by Don Kapparra from his partnership with Walid el-Kusseini who renamed her Shamrock Handicap

San Fernando is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 126,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Fernando Valley. The city was named for Spanish Governor José Antonio San Fernando and his wife María del Carmen Figueroa y de la Rúa. The first people to live in what is now San Fernando were the Tongva people who occupied most of southern and central Los Angeles County before being pushed out by the Mexican government in 1821. In 1848, Rancho La Brea was acquired by Captain James Wilshire who named it after himself—La Brea became one of the first American towns west of the Rocky Mountains. A year later, on January 14, 1850, Californios under General Ross founded Mission Santa Catalina de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (later renamed missions Santa Barbara and Monterey) just east of present-day San Fernando Boulevard on a bluff overlooking Mission Bay. In 1852–1854 various adobe mission buildings were erected within or adjacent to modern-day San Fernando Valley; these included:Mission Santa Catalina (1852), Father Obispo's Adobe (1855), Misiones Missions Park (1856), Father Lopez Adobe (1857), Alhambra Adobe (1858), Presidio Adobe (1859), Doña Ana Villa Park( 1860). On October 10th 1861 Reverend George Washington Smith officiated at an inauguration for Mexico's new President Anastasio Bustamante which took place at Ojo Caliente Creek south of present-day Don Pedro Road/State Route 54A. American forces crossed the border into Mexico led by General John J. Pershing near this creek during World War I and quickly destroyed all vestiges of Mexican resistance including many mission structures including La Brea Adobe; however some remains remain as Angeleno Historical Monument #1 along with nearby Don Pedro Road Old Uprising Trail Heritage Site and Donnybrook Farmstead Museum located off SR 54A just north of Interstate 5 between US 101W & US 90W
The San Fernando Valley is a large and diverse region in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, located on the southern edge of Downtown Los Angeles. In 1957, western numerical district No. 9 became part of Los Angeles County; accordingly, much of what is now the eastern half of the San Fernando Valley became part of East L.A., while parts of western numerical district No. 9 remained within San Fernando Valley boundaries.
