At that time approximately 60% of all new housing constructed statewide was in Northern California’s coastal cities such as Berkeley or Oakland while less than 10% was produced within inland areas such as Stanislaus County or Kern County where entire towns were destroyed during fighting between Japanese Imperial forces retreating home following Japan's surrender at Tokyo Bay on September 2 1945 and United States Army units occupying those areas subsequent to that day’s victory over Japan at Okinawa Peninsula).
