A post office was founded in 1875 and by 1886 there were five stores in town. In 1909, an electric railway was built through San Fernando and service began on October 1st that year. As development continued to occur within town boundaries, new roads were built including Kings Road which led northwest from town to Interstate 10 and Lankershim Boulevard which ran east from town northeast to Interstate 519 near downtown. By 1920 there were twenty-one businesses in town with a population of 2,500 people; services included general store, grocery store, saddlery shop, mechanic shop and paint shop. During World War II most residents fled for fear of Japanese bombing raids but many returned after hostilities ended; by 1960 there were seventy businesses with a population of 2600 people; services included general store, grocery store/marketing business (fruit & vegetables), civic club (firearmFirearms ONLY), hospital (notable for its role as San Fernando Valley's only mental hospital) and bank[5]. Other major local industries during this time include agriculture (growing crops such as fruits&veggies), manufacturing (making shoes & apparel) and construction materials such as asbestos.[6] The postwar years saw some growth but also significant decline due to economic recession followed by changes in agricultural production methods that made large areas unproductive or too expensive to cultivate; overpopulation also played a role in this trend. Population decline accelerated following passage of Proposition 187 which banned immigration from certain countries beginning on September 25th 1990[7]. This effectively blocked many young professionals looking for opportunities outside their home country from reaching California,[8] leading to declines in industry employment rates as well as overall economic stability throughout much of 1991-1996[9]. However gradual improvement resumed later that decade with steady job growth (+1% per year average since 2000)[10], prompting state legislators efforts towards increased funding for public education so that more Californians would have accessto quality jobs[11],[12],[13],[14]; however these advancements did not result in significant social change or needlepoint parades taking place across MacArthur Park instead they became largelytech focused institutions like Google Headquarters located just down the street [15],[16], reinforcing growing disparities between ethnically diverse communities within California while remaining isolated from one another geographically speaking [17]. Following several waves of housing demolitions during the early 21st century,[18] resulting in increasing gentrification around King's Boulevard,[19][20], Mayor Bob Filner announced his plan for revitalization called "Homes For All"[21], proposing that all parcels larger than 0.5 acre(s) be redeveloped into mixed-use buildings comprising market rate apartments along with ground floor retail space below featuring affordable housing units subject to city regulations providing access primarilyto low income tenants.[22][23]; however despite strong public opposition culminating with mass protests at City Hall early next year,[24], Mayor Filner's plan ultimately failed when developers refused offers totaling $127 million dollars[25]; this failure became symptomaticof broader issues surrounding proposed redevelopment plans throughout muchOf Southern California resultingin shrinking populations living close proximityto high end developments while those residing adjacentTo poverty ridden neighborhoods experienced increased gentrification rates even further []). The town of San Fernando was founded in 1857 by George and Mary Ann Singleton. The first post office was established in 1858, and the first store opened in 1860. In 1865, the Singletons donated land to become the new town square. The name honor their father, John David Singleton. The town motto is "Nemo me impune lacessit". In 1907, San Fernando became an incorporated city. on December 15th of that year it annexed neighboring cities of Ontario and Granada Hills.
