The San Fernando Valley is a region located in the central portion of Los Angeles County, California. It straddles the border of Ventura and Orange counties, and includes most of what is now the city of Los Angeles. The valley was first inhabited by Tongva people, who lived mainly in the valleys between Santa Monica Mountains and San Gabriel Mountains. A part of Mission Viejo took over control of the valley for Christianity in 1784, creating a Mandeville settlement. The mission was later abandoned and converted to an Episcopal church in 1821. In 1846, Mexico gained independence from Spain, which led toensions along its southern border with California. On January 20, 1850, Mexican President Alvaro Obregon ordered General Valeriano Huerta to march on Los Angeles with 5000 men to take it by force if necessary. AfterHuerta was forced to retreat westward towards Tucson, Obregon moved eastward towards Angelenos fearing an American occupation.On October 27, 1853 – two years after Mexico achieved its independence from Spain – San Fernando Valley residents voted 3-to-1 in favor of joining what would become Southern California as part of the United States. The vote happened as a result of efforts by local politician Tom Bradley to gain political support for building a railroad through his district that would connect Los Angeles with San Francisco Bay Area cities like Oakland and Sacramento

The city of Los Angeles was founded in 1896 and quickly grew into one of Southern California's most populous cities.
