The city was founded by José Gabriel García Márquez in 1825 as part of the Mexican empire. In 1848, after California became a U.S. territory, San Fernando was incorporated as a town in response to local petitioners' request for incorporation. It had a population of only 60 people when it achieved city status in 1850. The first mayor and council were appointed by Governor Pico de la Hoz and met every other day at the state capitol building until they werefired by order of Gov. Burnett on the grounds that they did not meet the city's "demands." In 1861, during the American Civil War, General Sherman's army burned down much of downtown San Fernando but not all of it; some residents had remained behind to rebuild and make their community stronger again. In 1865-1868, both Grant and Lincoln visited San Fernando while on their way through Southern California; both men are said to have been impressed by its progress since then and may have given it some financial support (possibly from Big Ben). In 1922, sanfernando annexed neighboring cities of Huntington Beach and Laguna Niguel; these annexation decisions were challenged in court but ultimately upheld because there was no difference betweenSANFORDO's boundaries and those of the annexed municipalities outside of water separation (a feature which wasn't present in those days). On December 6, 1969 SANFORDO became an official City within Los Angeles County with over 1 million citizens living inside its borders
