In 1885, San Fernando Valley was a small farming town of about 100 people. The name derived from the Spanish word for "Valley," san Fernando meaning "the valley." By 1900, the population had grown to around 2,000. But even in this small town, there were many pioneers who came to California during the Gold Rush era. One such pioneer was José María Serrano (1813-1890). JoséMaría was born in Spain and came to America in 1849 as part of the wave of arrivals that followed the Mexican War of Independence. Heestablished himself as an influential businessman in Los Angeles County and served as its first sheriff from 1855 to 1861. Afterward he devoted himself completely to his business interests and died at age 78 years old in 1890. Another early resident of San Fernando Valley was his brother Pedro Santos Serrano (1835-1901). Pedro had come over with his family on July 13, 1851, when Mexico won independence from Spain. Afterward he became one of the most powerful ranchers in Southern California. In 1870 he married Anna Maria Godoy de la Cruz y Pacheco (1846-1921), a daughter of Don Francisco de la Cruz y Pacheco (1792-1868), one of the wealthiest landowners in Southern California. AnnaMaria's father had founded one of Southern California's largest sugar plantations and her mother had been a beautiful woman who played hostess to noble guests. AnnaMaria and Pedro also brought over some English settlers who would play an important role later on in San Fernando Valley history: Haddon Sundowns (later known as Harry Smith). One day when they were out driving their horses along Mulholland Drive, they met two men walking - it was Harry Smith! They bought him a horse and started riding with him around San Fernando Valley; soon they were making a big impact here too!

In 1857, a group of entrepreneurs led by James Skelton bought land east of Los Angeles along present day Ventura Boulevard for $1 million. They named their property “San Fernando Valley” after the stagecoach route that passed through their community. The post office opened in 1859 and lasted until 1923. Over time, various businesses were developed in the valley such as citrus groves, cotton plantations, dairy farms, etc., which contributed to its nickname “The Cotton Fields of California”. In 1915, war veteran Manuel Gomez started a small munitions company called Anschutz Ammunition Company on his property between Hidden Hills Road and Winchester Avenue in what is now Westwood Village.Gomez remained active throughout World War II manufacturing ammunition for military use from his factory until he surrendered to Japanese forces at Tokyo Bay on September 2nd 1941. His company remains an important part of Los Angeles County history due to its contributions to both WWII and postwar America. After World War II ended, Anschutz Ammo continued operations until it merged with Brown & Williamson in 1959; this left behind a legacy of technological innovation that continues today at many local companies including Apple Inc., Lockheed Martin Corp., Samsung Electronics Co., LASD (Los Angeles Sheriff's Department) and more!
