San Dimas is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 86,521 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most populous cities in California and the third most populous city in Los Angeles County after L.A. and San Francisco. The name "San Dimas" means "place of the cattle." The first settlement in what is now San Dimas was made by Mexican traders from Pueblo de los Angeles on December 17, 1814 when José María Centeno and Antonio Miguel Figueroa bought 6 Rancho Cucamonga from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $1,000. This rancho eventually became part of the Rancho Santa Anita which was granted to Fernando De la Torre on February 12, 1825 for $10,000 In 1851 John Sutter founded Sutter's Gold Rush Mine near present-day San Dimas; this claim led to his later nickname of "Father Of The West". In 1861 Sutter donated 2 million acres (8 km2) of land to the City of Los Angeles as part of an agreement that resulted in the creation of Los Angeles County. A year later he sold his remaining stake in Rancho Santa Anita to James Gadsden for $4 million On July 9, 1870s two men named George Hearst agreed to buy all but 7 square miles (18 km2) around present-day San Dimas from John Sutter for $15 million plus interest – making him richest man ever to set foot Upon an American soil. At this time there were only 235 people living in Southern California statewide. On January 15th 1871 Hearst submitted a formal proposal to purchase all anchorages within 1 mile/3 kms (0.6 mi/1 km) or less of Irvine beach on then known as Harbor Island for use as a shipping point between Long Beach and Ventura Harbor with access both ways across Morro Bay; however no offer was accepted He then offered Californians 10% ownership thereof upon sale back into state hands thereby creating what would become Hearstown . On November 20th 1872 Hearst completed payment on Hart's wharf at Newport Beach before moving his family ashore during wintertime aboard their new vessel SS Constitution which took them directly from Hart's wharf opposite Seal Island across Morro Bay into Yorba Linda Canyon where they established their new township called Hollywood
The San Dimas area was originally part of Rancho Santa Fe, a Mexican land grant given to José Antonio Miranda in 1821. The Rancho Santa Fe name may be derived from the mission San Francisco de Asís mentioned in an establishment deed for Mission Santa Anita dated February 10, 1795. The mission was built on the site of what is now downtown San Dimas by Father Junípero Serra and is still in use today as a parish church. In 1853, the Rancho Santee sale included all of Los Angeles County and the southern half of San Bernardino County. This left San Dimas with only a small portion of the then-unincorporated county including most of present-day Pasadena and Bel Air. In 1903, following his death, John Dutton donated all of his holdings in Pasadena to the city, which renamed it Caltech Park after him.
