San Dimas is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 117,827 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. The name "San Dimas" means "place of milk." After many years of being a small town, San Dimas grew rapidly as an agricultural center during the early part of the 20th century. A major dairy company, Agromedia Inc., still operates in downtown San Dimas today. In 1925, movie producer Harry Cohn bought land east of downtown for a movie studio and named it after his home state of New York – Cohn Studios became one of Hollywood's most famous studios. In 1947,Agricultural Products Co., which had been founded in 1919 by three brothers who ran a grocery store and processing plant on El Camino Real near Winchester Road (now UCR), merged with Hormel Foods to form Reynold's Organization Company Ltd.). That year also saw the opening of Interstate 15 which bypassed San Bernardino County and made San Dimas one of its primary Industrial Areas. In 1950-1951, General Motors built their largest manufacturing plant in Northern California when they acquired Chevrolet from Ford Motor Company. By 1962-1963, Agromedia had ceased operations due to consolidation within the dairy industry; however, new companies were born out of that: Dairy Queen opened in 1967 as Californian Creamery; then Pabst Brewing Corporation moved into downtown San Dimas from Corona Ranch in 1969; finally Jell-O announced plans to open their first factory outside Detroit in suburban Midland Township (near Novi) in 1973). However these new businesses did not survive long due to competition from more recent entrants such as KOCH Foods Incorporated (founded 1971) and PepsiCo (founded 1976). The last major business activity took place around 2000 when Yahoo! purchased Agromedia's assets for $1 billion making it one of the biggest technology acquisitions ever made at that time Today there are few remaining traces left behind from those earlier days - except for some abandoned buildings on Elmira Street across from City Hall which once housed both Agromidia and Reynold's Organisation Company Ltd.'s marketing headquarters
In 1848, the people of San Dimas voted to incorporate as a city. The first mayor was John A. Worth and the first City Council was appointed by Mayor Worth. The San Dimas Manufacturing Company was founded in 1852 by George W. Stephenson and other capitalists from Dayton, Ohio. The company manufactured goods for local consumers and exported its products to California and other parts of the United States. In 1872, the company merged with another Dayton-based company, the Des Moines Manufacturing Company, creating what is now known as Des Moines Corporation. In 1906, San Dimas became part of Los Angeles County when it was annexed by Pasadena.
