Knives are a part of San Dimas’s history. People have been using knives for Fuyu, Shearing and Fishing since the 1800s. The first knife factory was opened in 1876 in San Dimas by James C. Cook and Company. In 1892, the company was bought by W.H. Drysdale who closed it down in 1913 because of World War I problems. The company reopened in 1918 under the name of Drysdale and Company with a new factory on Sherman Boulevard in downtown San Dimas. In 1924, the company changed its name to Sunbeam Corporation and became one of America’s leading manufacturers of kitchen tools including dinner forks, spoons, whisks and other cooking utensils. Sunbeam also made hunting knives which were used by Alaskan Eskimos during their hunts during the 1920s-30s. In 1954, Sunbeam merged with fellow American manufacturer Emerson Electric to form Emerson Electric Corporation which continued making kitchen tools until their bankruptcy in 1998.

Knives have been a part of the San Dimas community for over 100 years. Knife making began in 1864 when William H. Sadler and his brother, Charles, started a knife shop in the town. The shop was known as "The Sadlers' Shop" until 1901. In that year, their nephew, John W. Sadler took over the business and continued to run it until his death in 1944. From then on, the business was run by two sons-in-law, Harry and Helene Weininger. They ran it until it was sold to Tom Yoder in 1969. Tom Yoder operated it until he died in 1988. It is now owned by David Glickman who operates it as a museum.
The city of San Dimas, California is located in the Inland Empire region of Southern California. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 as of 2015. The city is situated on a small plateau overlooking the San Gabriel Mountains and has a Mediterranean climate. The first Europeans to visit San Dimas were Jesuit missionaries in 1769-1770. A Mission District was established in 1821 and it grew rapidly with the arrival of Mexican immigrants in the 1840s. By 1870, there were more than 10,000 people living in San Dimas. In 1892,San Dimas became an independent municipality with its own government and school system. Today, San Dimas is a vibrant community with cultural attractions such as its Masonic Temple Museum and Library which features rare books from around the world; theaters such as the Lyceum Theater; shopping at local boutiques and department stores; restaurants including some that are well known for their international cuisine; golf courses;and many other post-secondary institutions and businesses.

In 1853, the first post office in San Dimas was established. In 1901, the population of San Dimas was 2,500. By 1920, the population had increased to 10,000 and by 1930 it had reached 12,000. The town grew rapidly due to its location on a major route between Los Angeles and Pasadena.
