San Dimas is a town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The name "San Dimas" comes from Spanish and means "the place near the mountain". The first Europeans to visit what is now San Dimas were Mexican traders who sailed up the Santa Monica River in 1821. Heading westward along the river, they saw an abandoned mission and thought it must be some kind of Indian village because there were no other villages of that size on either side of the river. In 1824, Spanish explorer Antonio Lopez de Portocarrero reached this region and named it La Altena (meaning "the old fort"). He discovered two small towns - San Fernando and Mission Viejo - but he never built any permanent structures here. In 1853, Mormon pioneers arrived in wagon trains from Salt Lake City and founded Midway Ranch northeast of today's San Dimas Boulevard. They began irrigating land around present-day Midway Canyon for growing crops, raising livestock, constructing dwellings and establishing a small town called Centerville (later called Fullerton). The pioneer period ended about 1880 when most of these settlers moved away to find new opportunities or emigrate to North America after the Mexican-American War ended with American victory over Mexico. Today's downtown contains most of what was once Centerville: a businesses district with several hundred buildings dating back to 1886; Pioneer Park; Main Street; Pioneer Avenue which leads east from downtown through some very old agricultural areas including Arroyo Seco Creek Valley; and parts of Mt Bachelor Road which paralleled ranchland until just recent times when it has been developed as a commercial corridor running east-west between Downtown Los Angeles and Inglewood Hills..

The San Dimas community of approximately 100,000 people was first established in 1879. The area now known as San Dimas was originally the Rancho Cucamonga Mexican land grant given to José Antonio Montoya and his wife, María del Carmen López. The original residents were Native American Ohlone people who worked the ranchos. In 1887, a group of English-speaking settlers from Southern California founded the town of Cupertino on the eastern edge of San Dimas. In 1912, they erected a wooden schoolhouse in what is now called Park Avenue. That same year, they organized their first municipal election and named themselves City of Cupertino. In 1916, an earthquake struck Los Angeles County and damaged much of downtown San Diego. The resulting floods destroyed many homes and businesses in San Dimas and other parts of southern California; however, the city’s social services continued to be run by volunteers until 1933 when city officials assumed full authority over public welfare. During World War II (1941- 1945),San Dimas became one of the largest Japanese American communities in western U.S., with more than 1,000 Japanese Americans working for numerous companies connected with military production during that time period. Many jobs were lost during the war as a result of Government quotas limiting employment to citizens from certain racial groups (i.e., Asians). After Japan's surrender in 1945, many Japanese Americans left for various reasons – some because they wanted to assimilate into society after years living under occupation rules; others because they felt that forced relocation would have violated their civil rights as citizens of America. Some returned home after several years but most remained in East Bay counties where they formed small enclaves known as Japantowns or JimmuVillages until large numbers moved out again during the early 21st century due to new zoning laws enacted following 9/11 attacks which classified all buildings within five miles (8 km) of airports as terrorist targets subject to search without warrant or produce any evidence leading investigators there beyond suspicion
In 1853, when California became a state, a number of people who had been living in San Dimas town center started to move out. The original settlers were English and Irish immigrants who had come to the area in search of land. By 1857, there were only about 25 people living in San Dimas. However, by 1870, the population had grown to 300. However, by 1880, the population of San Dimas had decreased again because of waves of immigration from Mexico and Asia. In 1912, San Dimas was annexed by Los Angeles County and its population increased once again because of new growth in adjacent areas such as West Hollywood and Echo Park. Today, San Dimas is a small but vibrant community with diverse cultures that include Mexican Americans (of all backgrounds), Asians (of all backgrounds), Hispanics (of any race), retirees, artists and tech professionals.
