In 1850, when American settlers began flowing into Southern California via Stagecoach Road, they landed at Point Mugu on Long Beach Peninsula; later called Camp Pendleton because it served as an artillery range for military operations near Laguna Beach during World War II. In 1852 Don Carlos Alvarado purchased 2 acres adjoining what are now Westwood Boulevard and Sepulveda Streets for $1125; today’s Alvarado Avenue runs parallel to this property line. With its extensive public works program that included grading streets and building churches (St John’s Abbey being built in 1865), rapid growth followed soon after Alvarado opened his land up for farming purposes which led to increased development noise throughout the night due to cattle drives going through his fields during ranches hands timesaving over larger irrigation systems needed for agriculture only 8 miles away at Planchon Lake while marketeers peddled goods available only three blocks south along Ocean Drive generating so much traffic that “the people below could not hear what was said above them about politics or business” according to journalist Jerald Willis writing about early days of town planning in southern California . On January 1st 1882 voters approved incorporation of unincorporated areas lying east/northwest off Mulholland Drive between Venice Boulevard – then known as Lankershim Boulevard -and Western Pacific Railroad tracks; this area became known as East Hollywood because all businesses situated there had their addresses listed on East Hollywood street maps published by the Odd Fellows Masonic Lodge No 454 starting November 15th 1880 thereforeLos Angeles County was formed December 5th 1860 with its eastern boundaries extending out beyond Westwood Blvd./Sepulveda Street eastward whereupon annexation into Pasadena took place effective April 7th1881 making San Dimas effectively two separate municipalities although still considered part of same county under state law governing local government

Sloat giving 6,336 acres (2 kilometer) to James P. Taylor for $8 per acre was recorded in the Recorder's Office in Monterey County. As ranching became more popular in this region, many families came to live and work on the property around Sloat Valley. Many were farmers who raised crops and cattle; others worked as surveyors and engineers surveying new land for ranching or mining operations. Some of these people built homes and churches on what is now Sloat Valley Road. The first post office in San Dimas opened in 1868; it was called Hacienda de las Flores because there were flowers growing on the property at that time. In 1898, Republican James Mapes replaced Democrat Jesse Fenton as county sheriff after Fenton was acquitted of bribery charges following a campaign against him by party members inspired by William McKinley's attempt to gain an Ulysses S Grant presidency through corrupt practices during his time as Secretary of War
